One Lucky Elephant Screens Tomorrow!

When Flora the elephant loses her zest for performing, David Balding, producer of Nantucket's own Circus Flora, goes on a journey of mammoth proportions to find her a new home, revealing the unintended consequences of raising a wild animal in captivity in One Lucky Elephant. Caught between the human and animal worlds, Flora embodies the harsh reality elephants face as man continues to expand his territory. Filmed over a decade, the documentary raises questions about humans' complex relationships with animals for which there are no easy answers. One thing is certain: After watching this film, it is impossible to look at an elephant in a zoo or a circus in the same way.

Tickets still available for Facing History and Ourselves: Granito!

We are proud to present, along with Facing History and Ourselves, the revolutionary documentary Granito, written and directed by Pamela Yates.

The five people whose colliding destinies are depicted in Granito are connected by the war-torn Guatemala of 1982, when a genocidal military campaign exterminated nearly 200,000 people, most of them Mayans. The five sift for clues buried in archives of mind, place, and historical memory. As if a watchful Mayan god were weaving the threads of these stories, the film itself emerges as an active player in the present. The protagonists piece together narratives capable of unlocking the past and settling matters of life and death. Each seeks to integrate wrongs done and justice sought while adding a granito, a tiny grain of sand, to this inevitably epic tale.

Check out the trailer hereGranito is screening TOMORROW, Wednesday, June 23rd, at 2:00PM at the Nantucket High School. Pamela Yates will be there for a panel discussion after the film. Buy your tickets now or at the High School!

It takes hard work to make the Festival a fun and culturally enlightening experience for the thousands who attend, and our volunteers are the public face of the Festival. We're looking for seriously dedicated individuals to work at the Festival's theaters and production office.

Our Mandatory Volunteer Meeting is happening TONIGHT (June 20th) at 7PM at the Greenhound Building at 10 Washington St. For more information, visit our Facebook page or email our lovely Volunteer Coordinator, Rema Sayge, at
