The Nantucket Film Festival created the Compass Rose Acting Award as a unique honor that recognizes an outstanding performer whose contribution to the world of acting has been profound and inspires screenwriters to create new material.

2016 Honors: Molly Shannon

Molly Shannon burst onto the television scene in 1995, when she joined the cast of Saturday Night Live. By the time she left the show in 2001, the memorable comic characters she had created were old friends to her fans.

Those characters include awkward and odd Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher and Sally O’Malley, a dancer in a skintight red jumpsuit with a bouffant hairstyle who proudly proclaims that at 50 she can still kick and stretch. Shannon's comedy, as embodied in these and many other memorable personae, is the perfect mix of zaniness and insightful wit.

Shannon is currently generating critical acclaim for her work in the dramedy Other People about a son’s return home to care for his mother, who is dying of cancer.
